How acupuncture works

Conditions that can benefit

How acupuncture works

Acupuncture needles are placed in specific locations using anatomic landmarks. These locations coincide with major nerve tracts and vascular bundles. By stimulating the nervous system the body releases various neurotransmitters (or signaling devices) responsible for reducing pain locally as well as in the brain and spinal cord.

Blood flow is also influenced by acupuncture. This increased flow not only brings in more oxygen that is necessary for tissue repair, but it also provides a means for harmful inflammatory byproducts to exit. In turn, speeding up the healing process,

What to expect

Conditions that can benefit

How acupuncture works

  • Once placed acupuncture needles typically stay in for 10-15 minutes.

  • Pets can be tired and potentially worse in the first 24 hours. This is typically followed by improvements.

  • Appointments are usually weekly (or biweekly for acute conditions) for 3-4 weeks, followed by a tapering to find the “sweet spot” interval for that individual.
